Description

Description (Service)

Counselling services aim to support children/youth and their families by:

  • addressing identified needs and challenges
  • strengthening awareness and understanding of the challenges and why they might be occurring
  • reducing the severity of mental health problems or symptoms
  • strengthening coping strategies, and reducing the need for more intensive services

Counselling services can be provided for children and youth experiencing:

  • changes in mood swings or suddenly feeling anxious, sad, tearful, worried
  • problems at school: with learning performance, peers and/or classroom behaviour; sudden changes in daily patterns
  • difficulty sleeping or staying asleep or problems with appetite
  • an increase in physical complaints: stomach ache, headache, not feeling well
  • behavioural changes: excessive anger, acting out (hitting, fighting, extreme tantrums, stealing); bedwetting
  • decreased interest in previously enjoyed hobbies, foods, activities

Prioritization is determined by each individual's unique needs, informed through internal consultation and shaped collaboratively with input from community prioritization tables

The program offers:

  • individual and family counselling
  • parent education and support, individually or in groups
  • therapeutic groups for children and youth
  • case management and referral to other services
  • TAPP-C (The Arson Prevention Program for Children) assessments, in partnership with Brantford and Brant County Fire Departments
  • distance counselling via telephone or video conference
