Eligibility
  • varied severities/types of Aphasia due to stroke or injury to the brain (Acquired Brain Injury (ABI), Primary Progressive Aphasia (PPA), tumor) 
  • medically stable and living in the community  
  • willing to participate in Supportive Conversation Groups 
  • demonstrates appropriate behaviour in a social group setting  
  • no/minimal cognitive difficulties  
  • client care needs (i.e. toileting, feeding) are met by client or caregiver (Note: some locations will have Day Program Staff available to assist)

Description
Description (Service) Adult day program - social, recreational, and therapeutic activities for adults with aphasia in a group setting for part of the day 
 
Supported Conversation Groups  
  • small, supportive conversation groups  
  • build communication skills and confidence  
  • meet other people with aphasia  
  • learn new ways to communicate - modalities include; speech, gestures, facial expressions, writing, drawing, and technology 
  • improve communication skills and confidence  
  • socialize
 
Caregiver Support Sessions  
  • weekly and monthly support groups for caregivers, family members/friends  
  • facilitated by a Social Worker
 
Couples/Partner Conversation Training  
  • program for person with aphasia and a partner - spouse, friend, children etc  
  • learn and use communication strategies  
  • increase comfort and enjoyment in having conversations
 
Groups are facilitated by a Speech Therapist, Communicative Disorders Assistant and trained volunteers 
 
Program is run in partnership with the Haldimand Norfolk Community Senior Support Services
